Cleaner and Safer, Power Everywhere

What are we really talking about when we talk about battery cell cycle life? (2)

As mentioned in the first part of the series, techniques like battery cell packaging, temperature management system, and BMS could help the integrated battery cells of BESS to reach higher cycle life. But how could they help and what factors should the purchasers focus on?

First, battery packaging technology is a crucial step for cell consistency and package safety. The process consists of many key steps, including structure design, tab welding, mechanical assembly, etc. In QAES, the battery pack design follows the power battery pack (used in electrical vehicles) standard, optimizing the structure safety and thermal management. Moreover, connection resistance could be determined by professional testing instruments, ensuring that all the taps are welded firmly and with similar resistance, which increases the system consistency.

Second, a temperature management system is the key to prolonging the cycle life of battery cells and ensuring consistency. A good temperature management system can not only monitor the temperature of different parts of the battery pack in real time, but also perfectly balance them, thus maintaining the consistency of all battery cells to prolong the system cycle life. QAES developed and employed a direct cooling system rather than the mainstream indirect one to maximize system cycle life with even lower power consumption.

Lastly, the BMS could balance the degrading rates of all battery cells, thus prolonging the BESS cycle life. For example, QAES’s self-developed BMS could accurately estimate the state of health (SOH) of the cells for further balancing actions. By flexibly scheduling loads, fine temperature controlling, and reasonable charge-discharge management, the BMS could finely keep the cells degrading at the same rate. Even in extreme situations like cell failure, the QAES BMS could issue early warning, enabling timely cell maintenance and replacement.

To sum up, although cell cycle life does not equal BESS cycle life, there are numerous engineering solutions to narrow the gap between them, i.e., better packaging processes, an advanced temperature management system, and a more intelligent BMS. To address this issue, QAES could provide you with BESS with a cycle life of over 10,000, and ready to support your energy storage need!
